Does Walmart Price Match in 2026? Policy & Exclusions

Walmart price match 2026 policy, exclusions and a worked example

Last verified: October 26, 2026, against Walmart’s corporate policy page (price match section marked “Updated: June 8, 2023”).

Does Walmart price match? Yes, but only in one narrow case. If you’re buying in a Walmart U.S. store and the identical item is listed for less on Walmart.com, the store will match the Walmart.com price. You have to ask at checkout, and the store manager has the final say. Walmart won’t match Amazon, Target or any other competitor, and it doesn’t price match orders placed on Walmart.com at all.

Older guides still describe Walmart’s ad-match days. This guide sticks to Walmart’s current policy text, then runs the numbers on a made-up purchase.

What is the Walmart price match policy?

Walmart’s price match policy splits into two parts, one for stores and one for Walmart.com. The corporate page we read dates that section to June 8, 2023, so details may have changed since.

In a Walmart U.S. store, Walmart says it will match “the price of the identical item advertised on Walmart.com.” The conditions:

  • You must tell the associate the price at checkout.
  • The item has to be identical: same size, model, quantity, brand and color.
  • That identical item must be in stock and available to buy on Walmart.com when you ask.
  • Some matches need a supervisor’s approval, so the transaction can take longer.
  • Walmart reserves the right to limit matches to one per customer, per item, per day.
  • Matching Walmart.com prices isn’t available in Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico.
  • The store manager on duty has the final decision.

On Walmart.com, the policy is blunt. Walmart says it strives to offer the best price every day, so it offers no price matching there: not for competitor prices, Marketplace or third-party seller prices, prices in Walmart stores, or items that dropped in price after you bought them.

Does Walmart price match Amazon, Target and other competitors?

No. The in-store list of things Walmart won’t match starts with “competitor’s online or in-store prices.” That covers Amazon, Target, Best Buy and everyone else. Walmart’s ask-Walmart page repeats it: no price matching for “prices offered by competitors.”

So the question “does Walmart price match Amazon?” has a one-word answer. If Amazon has the item for less, Walmart won’t match it, and neither will the store manager under the written policy. Our Amazon coupon page is the place to check what’s live if you’d rather buy there. For electronics, compare current offers on our B&H Photo and Lenovo pages.

Does Walmart match sale prices?

Mostly no, and this is where most requests die. The policy excludes Walmart.com prices tied to “special events,” and it names examples: clearance, Rollback, Black Friday or Cyber Monday deals, and other limited-time promotions.

In practice:

  • A regular Walmart.com price that’s lower than the shelf price can be matched, if the item is sold by Walmart and in stock.
  • A Rollback or clearance price on Walmart.com can’t be matched, even though it’s a real lower price.
  • A Black Friday or Cyber Monday price can’t be matched.
  • Percentage-off ads and BOGO ads without a specified price can’t be matched.

Since those sale prices are excluded from price matching, buying during the event is the only way to get them. To see how Walmart fall deals stack up against rivals, read our comparison of the three big October sales compared.

What doesn’t Walmart price match?

From the in-store policy, Walmart says it does not match:

  • Competitor prices, online or in store
  • Walmart.com special-event prices, including clearance, Rollback, Black Friday or Cyber Monday deals, and other limited-time promotions
  • Prices from Walmart Marketplace retailers or other third-party sellers
  • Bundle offers, instant rebates, mail-in offers and offers that include financing
  • Ads that require a purchase to get a gift card
  • Percentage-off and Buy One Get One Free ads without a specified price
  • Prices from other Walmart or Neighborhood Market stores

That last one surprises people. Walmart’s ask-Walmart FAQ says each store manages its own inventory and that it isn’t Walmart’s policy to price match its own stores. A lower shelf price at the Walmart across town doesn’t qualify.

How much can you save? A worked example

The numbers below are hypothetical. They aren’t real Walmart prices. They show how the rules work.

Say you’re in a Walmart store and the shelf price on a drip coffee maker is $50.00. It’s the same model you’ve seen online.

Scenario 1: a regular Walmart.com price is lower. Walmart.com lists the identical coffee maker at $44.00, sold and shipped by Walmart, in stock. You show it to the cashier before paying.

  • Shelf price: $50.00
  • Walmart.com price: $44.00
  • Match: $50.00 − $44.00 = $6.00 saved, which is 12% off the shelf price ($6.00 ÷ $50.00)

Scenario 2: the $44.00 is a Rollback. Same numbers, but Walmart.com labels the price a Rollback. That’s a special-event price on the excluded list, so the match is $0.00. You pay $50.00.

Scenario 3: Amazon is cheaper. Amazon lists it at $40.00. Walmart won’t match a competitor, so you pay $50.00 or buy from Amazon. The gap is $50.00 − $40.00 = $10.00, or 20% of Walmart’s price. Whether that’s worth it depends on shipping and returns.

Scenario 4: the low price is from a Marketplace seller. A third-party seller on Walmart.com lists it at $38.00. Marketplace prices are excluded, so the match is $0.00.

Scenario 5: you want three. You need three identical coffee makers for gifts, and scenario 1 applies. Walmart can limit matches to one per customer, per item, per day. If the limit is enforced, you save $6.00, not 3 × $6.00 = $18.00.

Scenario 6: you bought on Walmart.com first. You order the coffee maker online at $50.00, and a week later the same listing drops to $44.00. Walmart.com doesn’t match items that dropped in price after purchase, so the match is $0.00.

The lesson: Walmart’s match is a checkout-time tool for one situation, a lower regular Walmart.com price. Everything else is a no. If you want to check that a lower price is genuine before you ask, our guide to reading price history shows how.

How do you ask for a Walmart price match?

  1. Pull up the item on Walmart.com on your phone before you get to the register. The item must be in stock there.
  2. Check it’s identical. Brand, model, size, color and quantity should all match the one in your cart.
  3. Check who sells it. If the listing says it’s sold by a third party, it’s a Marketplace price and it’s excluded.
  4. Check the price label. If it’s a Rollback, clearance or limited-time deal, don’t expect a match.
  5. Tell the cashier at checkout, before you pay. A supervisor may need to approve it.

If it’s declined, you can ask for the manager on duty. The policy gives that person the final decision, with no guarantee of a different answer. Before you ask, our Walmart coupon page may show a deal that beats the match.

Does Walmart price match in the app, on Walmart.com or for Walmart+ members?

Walmart’s policy describes one match: a store matching a price advertised on Walmart.com.

  • Walmart.com orders: Walmart says it doesn’t offer price matching on items offered on its website.
  • Matching a Walmart.com price in a store: this is the only match the policy describes.
  • The Walmart app and Walmart+: the policy text on Walmart’s corporate site talks about prices “advertised on Walmart.com” and is dated June 2023. For how a store treats app prices or a Walmart+ membership, check Walmart’s current policy page and ask the associate before you pay.

What if the price drops after you buy?

Under the written policy, Walmart doesn’t adjust prices after a purchase. For store purchases, the match request has to happen at checkout. For Walmart.com orders, Walmart specifically excludes items “previously purchased on Walmart.com that have since decreased in price.”

That’s a real difference from Target, which covers its own price drops for 14 days after you buy (more on that below).

Walmart’s return policy is a separate topic, not a price-drop guarantee. Per Walmart’s policies page, most items can be returned within 90 days with a receipt, consumer electronics within 30, and most items bought October 1 to December 31 until January 31. Whether returning and rebuying makes sense depends on the item. Our Walmart holiday return policy guide lists the exceptions.

Did Walmart ever match competitors?

Yes, which is why older articles may say it still does.

  • 2016: Walmart confirmed it was ending its ad-matching program, where a shopper could show a competitor’s ad for a lower price, at 500 stores as of June 9, according to Retail Dive. Shoppers were pointed to the Savings Catcher app instead.
  • 2019: Walmart ended Savings Catcher on May 14, 2019. Business Insider reported that Walmart would no longer offer price matching in stores once the tool expired, and that its website said it would match Walmart.com prices but not a competitor’s advertised price.

Walmart’s own pages don’t give a history, so we’re only citing those two reports.

How does Walmart compare with Target and Amazon?

Target no longer matches Amazon, Walmart or other competitors. It matches only its own prices, and it covers a drop in its own price for 14 days after you buy. We cover the rules and exceptions in our Does Target price match? guide, and our Target Circle coupon page lists current deals.

Amazon says on its pricing page that it compares prices to competitors itself and, as a result, “we don’t offer price matching compensation.”

The result: none of the three will match another retailer. Walmart’s match only helps when the lower price is on its own website, and unlike Target, it doesn’t cover price drops after you buy.
